My 2 yr old daughter tripped over her twin brothers scooter and fell pretty hard 2 days ago.. She bled for awhile and has a cut in her bottom lip, but her gums above her teeth (upper mouth) is now purple.. Will this go away by itself or did the damage some nerves/permanent teeth???
I haven't taken her to a dentist yet because he absolutely HATES doctors and freaks out..
Anyone out there with some good advice for me..

For those of you that say take her to a dentist.. well that's easier said than done when she will cry to the point of throwing up at any doctors office..

Her teeth are not loose and she's not hurting..She eats and drinks like she has always done and when I ask touched her gums (more like poked) she didn't tell me it hurt..

Just wanted to add that I talked to a dentist on the phone.. He said that since she has no loose teeth and is not complaining about pain there's nothing he could do to help.. The blue/purple-ish color on her gums are just normal bruising.. The bruising has over the last 2 days almost gone away..

That's normal, she may have cut her bottom lip but she hit both top and bottom lips so the gum area under her top lip is probably just bruised . My 17 month old smacked her mouth on one our coffee table legs and it bled alot for about a minute then stopped. Her gums were all bruised up but it never bothered her after that. She ate normal and all and it cleared up in a week. As long as her teeth arent loose or chipped I wouldn't take him to the dentist. I totally understand what it's like to have a child who's horrified to go to any type of doctor's office. My 5 yr old daughter has to get nitrous just so the dentist can look in her mouth. It's a nightmare. she's getting dental work done soon for a cavity in her back tooth and she'll have to be completely knocked out for the procedure.

But I think it's safe in just taking the wait and see aproach as long as it's not interfering with her eating and drinking . Dont worry about.

i think she just bruised it. mouths heal pretty fast, so i would give a call to the dentist and at least see if you should worry. they can probably tell you some stuff to test at home to make sure it isnt nerve damage (but that wouldnt cause discoloration usually).

i would poke it and ask your toddler if she could feel if (not hard or with anything sharp of course). if she can, she's probably fine. if not, off to the dr. (oh and see if any teeth are loose, i knew a girl who tripped and wacked her face on a table when we were in preschool, knocked both top front teeth right out - after they went thru her bottom lip first)

Wow some people are super harsh when giving advise. Even when advise is asked for, it should be done in a nice non-accusatory way. Good grief. Every mom has been the worried mom before, grow some compassion and understanding people. BTW no one is an expert at being a mom, not even the seasoned ones.

I would say take your kid to the doctor if it s still bothering them after a few days or if the teeth are loose.

Could be a hematoma - or bruising under the tissue.

But really - she needs to see a dentist. So what - she cries.....who is the parent? If she pukes - take a zip lock baggie with you to catch it. You're letting a TWO YEAR OLD determine what is good for her.....now really how much sense does that make?

Try a pediatric dentist - they can make it painless and fun.

It is probably just bruised if it gets worse or doesn't start to clear up some with in the next week or two. Then i would defiantly take her to the doctor.

Kids recover fast. This bruising will go away even though it looks a bit frightening. If she isn't complaining about it then there is probably nothing worse done.

my god and you haven't taken her to a doctors yet? the girl could grow up and be disfigured just because her parents "dont like doctors" grow up and take responsibility get her seen to my a professional instead of asking strangers for advice. Oh and a dentist is not a doctor !!!!
