I have to agree that what's going on is barbaric.

The question is:
How do you see this playing out in the end? Will the world stand by forever and just stare at the stonings and beheadings?

i think ( and hope ) that what this teacher is going through right now , may be the straw that breaks the camels back

I have a feeling that in the near future we are going to have good against bad ..... peace against hate
there are only going to be two kinds of people in the world ....

those who stand up against hate crimes and those who do them

No, the world won't just stand by and watch. Eventually everyone will choose a side. Either they feel that what someone (or a country) does is their own business, or they feel that what someone (or a country) does is their own business as long as it doesn't interfere with their own sense of right and wrong.

My opinion is that a person may have the right to hit me in the nose, but their right to not get hit stops when their fist hits my nose.
I too think it's barbaric when a woman gets whipped for being a rape victim or other similar "punishments". And while I understand and agree that societies need to raise a stink about these gross forms of misjustice, I can also see where a country might say, "Mind your own business. If you don't like what we do in our own country, then don't visit or live here."

I think about the stuff going on in Mass. now, about the proposed law to make it illegal for a parent to give their child a spanking. While I think there are very, very few reasons why a parent should resort to spanking their child - there are a few distinct situations where spanking may be needed to get their attention. If that law passes and someone who feels as I do who lives in Mass. spanks their child, they'll need to either move out of state or not spank. But if they do spank, then they deserve the punishment that will be set forth, as it is the law of the land (for Mass.).

Historically, fundamentalism always experiences a backlash...no matter what religion it stems from. I don't think this will spell the end for any religion, but I do think it will eventually lead to a swing back toward the middle.
Doesn't sound like I'm making any big predictions there, but I do think that's the way things generally happen. Revolutions are fairly uncommon.

Friday prayers brings out the worst in them. Those stirring up the peeps do it with lies. It's a power trip for the clerics.

I think she'll make it home safely and we should start hearing fewer people using the term religion of peace.

We stand by forever whilst starving children die in africa--why not?

We stand by forever whilst Canada hands out free health care
We stand by forever whilst England has a queen and not a president
We stand by forever whilst Asia limits the number of children a family can have and puts a high priority on education

Once we start butting in where do we stop?

Here's my sense of it - Sudan can not afford to alienate other nations... like Britian and the US. Sudan seems such a poor nation and economic sanctions would be devastating.

I would expect her to make it safely back to Britian. Or, at least, in one piece. She may have to go the way of Salmon Rushdie and hide from Extremist-Muslim assassins.

The answer to your ultimate question... I don't know. Perhaps isolate nations like Sudan.

I don't see a very good solution to this problem. One hand I think England should go over there and retrieve their teacher from being tortured. On the other hand if they do that a war would ensue.

Religion is the scourge of humanity, especially the Abrahamic religions. They have all gone through phases of violence and intolerance and yet demand tolerance from everyone else. There is no understanding of it, we will be better off if we all just evolve beyond religion.

What is to be done about the current state of radical Islam? We westerners should pull all of our people out and seal them in. No aid to them, no letting them out. They are free to destroy themselves if they choose.

Since Islam's intent is to convert all the infidels, they won't stop until they meet resistance. And since now there is a big holy war, and martydom is a virtue, then they will stop at nothing. So it's fight to the death and may the best infidel win.
