Newfoundland, as adults. They are wicked couch potatoes, but they will still need excersize. My newfie puppy is actually a lot calmer than my adult tibetan spaniel (who is only 10 lbs). I had an adult lab/coonhound who was pretty calm too (I got him when he was about 4, so I don't know how he was as a puppy) Try going to eukanuba.com and using the breed selector, they ask you about a lot of stuff that you want in a dog, thats how I found out about newf's when I was looking for a dog.

I worked at PetSmart for 3 years and dogs are a lot like humans. They are all different and how they act is mostly how they were raised. So there isn't necessarily a breed of dog that will be guaranteed to be the calmest. Sometimes the bigger dogs are more calm but I have also seen some small breads that are pretty calm. Examples would be mastifs (they seem to be pretty calm because they are a big bread of dog) and also small bull dogs (they seem to be lazy most of the time). But as long as you train your dog well, it shouldn't be all crazy and hyper all the time. Just make sure that you don't get a bread like a border collie or jack russell. They are meant to have a lot of energy and need a lot of running around outside each day to wear them out.

I have four dogs. A Chi/Rat Terrier, a Beagle and two APBTs. By far the most laid back is the Beagle. If there is a noise outside the other three go running off barking. The Beagle will just lay there. But if he thinks it might be a real problem then he joins in. His bay out does the barks of the other three. His main thing in life is: I am alway late for a nap or is it time to eat yet?
A Beagle is a great little easy going dog.

My Great Danes are super calm and very mellow. Not much disturbes them...alot of people have the misconception becasue they are big, that they need alot of exercise, but in reality, they are BUMS!!! I atttempt to walk them around the block and by half-way, i am dragging them because they are tired out already!! When in the house, they would rather be laying on the couch watching TV then anything!! I work for a vet and another very calm breed I see are re-tired Greyhounds, the racing dogs....tehy seem very mellow as well and that is what the owners all say too....good luck

Asking which breed is_____ is like asking which race is _____. Breed plays a small part in temperament, as do socialization and environment. I've seen Terriers that were couch mutts and I've seen breeds that were supposed to be mellow that would literally run until their pads came off and still want more. Any dog can be calm and mellow it's completely individual.

It depends temperments varies with dogs. My family's dogs are playful but they do calm down after a while. My sister's pug is laid back and sometimes cat naps during the day.
He's asleep right now!

i think the labrador is the calmest dog. i have one myself and he just walks around the house and generally sleeps a lot. He doesn't cause any trouble and does his own thing without bothering anyone else unless he wants to play. he has a really good temperament and wouldn't harm anyone

From a BREED ALL ABOUT IT I saw last year, they described clumber spaniels as the most laid back breed. Never owned one, but I've wanted to ever since I saw that episode.

Labs are great... so are Great Danes and Greyhounds. I had a Golden Retriever that was a real sweetheart. But the best of all was the little mutt we got from the rescue clinic. She was one especially sweet little lady!
