On the forth of July people go see fire works. They are attracted to fire from ancient fire worship.
Jesus was falling back on the fire worship tendency to attract worship to himself.

Works MIGHT mean worship.

But what people seem to miss is that the works which have eternal implications are those done through the Spirit. God initiates good works through those who are of the Spirit - His children.

All other works will be burned in the fire.

1 Corinthians 3
12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

If we do the works of the Spirit by the will of God, then we can truthfully say, " Glory to God", because He is the one who gets the credit - the boasting belongs to Him.

Jesus doesn't need to attract worship to himself. He is Worthy of all Honour.

You're going to worship something. It might as well be him. anything else is a waste of life.
