Same thing with my dog, but strangely, I have never heard him bark outside--weird dog? Yes!
I have my handy dandy spray bottle inside. When he starts barking at, say a flea walking down the street, I give him a squirt, getting his attention, then I hold his mouth closed and say, "Look, no bark." It's taken a long time, but he barks and I say, "Look, no bark." He then just looks out the window.
Also, there are those big, nasty bones at the pet shop. Dogs seem to love them, and they can be distracted for quite a bit of time. If the outside kennel is the only place they receive these tasty treats, perhaps he'll decide that barking is less attractive than chewing on that delicious bone.

Unfortunately, smacking him, even though abusive in nature, was a reward to your dog. He got your attention. It is hard to ignore your dog when he is barking, but he wants your attention so you have to ignore him.
You can try spraying him with water every time he barks, or use a soda pop can with rocks or 13 pennies (13 being your dogs unlucky number) and shake it every time your dog barks, but again you are giving him attention if you let him see you. Try to sneak up while he is barking and spray him with the water.
I would only use a bark collar as a last resort, they are very expensive and discourage your dog from barking completely, which may not be a good idea if your dog is your watch dog for your family!

As nerve wracking as it may be. You have to calmly and in a stern voice tell them to be quiet and simply ignore them if they continue. My dog has a barking problem as well. Once he sees hes not getting any attention he usually calms down. If all else fails try giving him a benadryl to calm him down. This may or may not work. Also make sure you ask your vet about the right benadryl dosage for your dog. Or perhaps your vet will have other ideas on how to keep your pup quiet. Hope this helps. Trust me I know how you feel.
P.S. Please dont use the shock collar technique.

There is a procedure that can be done to remove a dogs vocal cords although i think it is cruel and inhumane .The other option is just working with the dog and getting it to realize by training barking " not good"

For now use treats and toys but please do buy a barker breaker they are as low as 35.00 and work great. They do not cause pain. They cause annoying zaps just as when you walk across the carpet and touch a black board. I know...... I put my dogs barker breaker ON ME and barked! No pain, just an annoying zap. You will sooner or later need one so get one. Good Luck.

Well, first off you are one of those people who shouldnt even own a dog.. or any pet for that matter seeing how you think its ok to hit and shock a dog to make it do what you want it to . A dogs natural instinct , just like a babys is to cry, is to bark when its cold, hungry , bored, annoyed etc.. Would you shock or hit your baby? Get real! Our pets are to be like one of the family and I know I would NEVER treat one of my family members like that. The best thing for you to do is to give your dog to someone who will love , teach and nurture it. FREAK

get a 16 oz sprayer bottle and fill it up with water and then add one table spoon of mouth wash to it. And when he barks spray him in the face.

Get a muzzle. At the very least it will make it difficult for him to bark loudly.
