Nearly all that growth is from the third world. Nature tries to balance out these excessive birthrates with famine, but groups based in the rich countries then step in and provide them with enough food to survive and even increase in numbers, making the problem worse for the future.

The growth is slowing. Some local populations in rich countries are shrinking. It is only the really poor countries that have high fertility rates (# of births per woman). When those areas catch up with the rest of the world economically, population will stabilize.

Cheer up. World War III will take care of the problem. Malthus thought that overpopulation would lead to increased crime, "vice", and wars. He was an optimist.
