Ok, this is going to sound silly. I adopted my puppy a week ago and this morning I had to leave him alone in the house. He is in the kitchen, behind a gate, so he has plenty of room. But I am so sad to have left him! He was crying and looking at me with those sad little puppy eyes. He is only going to be left alone for about 4 or 5 hours, and he has his bed, toys, food and water but it is the first time he has been left alone. Will he be so sad the whole time? I'm such a wimp!

He will be sad for awhile, probably will cry. Then, being a puppy, something will catch his attention and he will be off to play. He will tire of that and possibly realize he is alone and the cycle will start all over again. He will nap and play, potty and cry..... Get him a puppy Kong toy, put peanut butter inside it, freeze it and give it to him when you have to leave him alone. This will hold his attention for quite some time. A new toy tossed in will get his attention, they honestly know when the toy is a new one they have had before. I have puppies right now and they get very excited over a new toy. I often pick up small toys that would be safe for puppies at yard sales, thrift shops, etc. Take them home and wash them before letting the puppy have one. Make sure they are not bean bag toys, don't have eyes or any parts that can come off an choke them, no wires in ears or limbs.

Ah, yes, the sad eyes treatment! I have a 2 & 1/2 year old that is my shadow and thinks that if I leave the house she will obviously be going with me! There are times when a dog has to stay home as not all places are dog friendly. And yes, you have to be firm! Calm and firm means you are in control and your dog will respond accordingly.
I suggest crate training your pup. Too much freedom while away can bring out misbehaviors in your pup that you have never seen before. A crate makes a dog feel secure, and if you are only going to be gone for a few hours, your pup will do fine in one.

This isn't meant to sound harsh, but you gotta get over it! Seriously. If you have this attitude every time you leave your pup, and avoid leaving him alone because you feel guilty, you are going to create HUGE separation anxiety issues in your dog.
He will be just fine. Don't act upset when you leave; don't kiss him and hug him and tell him you'll be home later. Leave knowing that he is going to have the time of his life and he will feel much more comfortable. And don't make a big fuss over him when you return home. He needs to know it's no big deal to be alone for a few hours.

He should be fine as long as you have puppyproofed teh area.
He is just like a toddler being left at teh babysitters or preschool for the first time. Yes he will ihine and all but he will be ok.

He will get used to it. My pups still sometimes make a fuss when I leave, but they sleep the majority of the time when I am gone

Don't make it a habit, and don't scold him for the mess he will make.
Provide him with a litter box with Kitty litter in it. Why should he be forced to hold it all day. He will live longer if he can pee when he needs to.

He or (OR She) should be okay.... just lock him/her in a crate (cage) until they get older... that's how my mom did ours....
when you get home see if he/she goes like "Momom mom!" It's really cute!!!! my little pug does that!!!
