I just read the novel STATE OF FEAR and it came up with different ideas about global warming ie; based on land use not carbon dioxide, also that maybe we are just in a earth cycle just like ice ages

It's been scientifically proven that this "global warming" is actually a cycle of the earth.

Not that I'm against saving the environment; we seriously need to do some work on that instead of claiming "The Republicans did it" or "The middle class did it" "They don't care" "We should do something!"

But nothing ever happens. That's the problem with people today. They will talk their heads off but nothing will ever get done.

GAH!

Crichton is a good author, but a lousy scientist.

Ice ages, and inter-glacial periods, are caused by small changes in Earth's orbit called Milankovitch cycles (by astronomers) or "orbital forcing" (by climatologists). Since Earth's orbit can be computed for thousands of years into the past and future, we know that orbital forcing peaked 6000 years ago, during the Holocene Maximum, and has been slowly cooling the planet since then. Here's the science:

Global warming is caused mostly by human burning of fossil fuels, which injects large amounts of CO2 into the air. (Burning non-fossil fuels, like wood, just recycles carbon that was in the air at one time, and has no net effect. Burning fossil fuels puts new carbon into the environment that wasn't there before.)

Land-use changes have an effect on climate change, but it's much smaller than fossil fuel burning, and has a net cooling effect. That's because cleared land reflects more sunlight than a forest. Here's a graph from the IPCC showing the effect of all anthropogenic climate forcings:

Mostly us by burning fossil fuels, and very real. "State of Fear" is a novel by a science fiction writer. Most everyone (and EVERY major scientific organization) knows the global warming scientists are correct.

Here's a nice graph of the causes, from the Source below:

There's a lot less controversy about this is the real world than there is on Yahoo answers:

And way less controversy in the scientific community than you might guess from the few skeptics talked about here:

"Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point. You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."

Good Book and Great Reference Source.

There are many different reasons why the Earth is warming, or even if the entire globe is warming. South America just finished the coldest winter season in the last 160 years.

Keep an open mind and be weary of those who tell you it's been determined that only man is killing the planet.

i tell you, global warming turns out like a natural cycle of the earth but its not natural because it is our activities that worsens global warming. it is mainly caused by greenhouse gases emitted in the factories, etc. there are tons of evidence that proves it so its up to you to doubt.

It's caused by people like Al Gore spewing out all that hot air when they open their mouths. No seriously, it's a natrual cycle that the Earth goes through. Keep your mind open and don't allow all the hype and propanganda get to you and turn you into another mindless sheep. (Oh I know you all that believe the hype about GW being caused by humans don't like to be called mindless sheep, but what else can you call it, when you all just follow along blindly? I tried to find constructive articles on the subject yesterday and the search engines are clogged with all the Gloom and Doom garbage. That's what you all follow without digging deeper to find the truth.)

global warming (aka climate change) = myth. Al Gore and Heidi Cullen have no basis to constructing this farce. The founder of The Weather Channel himself has debunked this myth.
