The talking to yourself is not the problem, its when you start answering.

I think you deserve a sincere answer...

There's not so fine a line between "safe" and "mental...insane...lost it"

There's a Mental-Health category, and you don't need to worry that you're in that category...

There are people who cross-over-the-line...but you'd know if you met the criteria...

You might want to cultivate the sensitivity and maturity you already have and make sure people around you aren't uncomfortable...they probably don't know what's "normal" and what's "not"

Other than that, your bottom-line answer is a scary thing called Psychotic Break...those unfortunates--and don't hate me for saying this (so to speak), but it's a different world where people are interacting with, and responding to, voices in their heads...if this weren't the Mental Health subsection, I wouldn't mention auditory hallucinations, but they're the most common...

so much for the yucky stuff...do all the "talking to yourself" you want...you're "safe" and not "mental...insane...nor have you lost it"!!!

YOu always hear it's when you start answering yourself that it is xondidered insane, but I disagree. I think that if you are alone and you are talking to yourself it's just thinking outloud, kind of a thought process you know? However, if you are walking down the street in daylight arguing with yourself and people start to stare. I'd say you have issues.

To think calling it insane is just a matter of popular opinon. Only you know yourself better than anyone else, so sometimes your conscience "advises" you of what to do and what not to do based on your own personal ethics. I think the only time it could be a problem is when it causes you to become violent or harmful to yourself or others.

There is nothing wrong with talking to yourself, although it is best done in private. Doing so does not make you insane. The old saying goes there is nothing wrong with talking to yourself as long you don't "talk back to" or answer yourself.

Talking to yourself, as I was led to believe, is actually a healthy thing. It helps you to register things a lot easier. Answering yourself isn't even a sign of mental illness.

It's just a myth.

Well, insane and just annoying to the general public are two different things. As long as you only do it in your head and nobody else answers you back, you're fine. Other than that, if it starts to interfere with your life, keeping you from doing things, then you need to get help.

It's safe as long as no one else hears it!!

You can talk to yourself all day ling as long as you are the only one there.

But if you choose to talk only to yourself in a room full of other people... Thats when yo need help.

As long as you are talking to Yourself and you know its you youre talking to,I dont see a problem really .sure peple will look at you funny,so dont do it in public.
those that refer to themselves in the third person or those who talk to the "people in their head' have a serious problem and should seek help.
I dealt with emotional illness for years (anxiety disorder / post traumatic distress.
one of the things that helped me a lot during my initial recovery was talking out loud to myself.
by doing so I was taking my logical self away from the emotional self and taking charge of times of crisis.
for years my emotions had run rampant and caused me to react to however they felt. which often wasnt within reality.
I had to then change that by mentoring my emotional self with my logical self.so in a severe panic attack I would begin talking to myself calmly and logicaly, relating facts to dispell the fear.and then give positive reenforcement untill the attack receded.
As time passed and I overcame my illness it was no longer nessasary to do this.and I very seldom talk out loud to myself anymore.
I would like to add that I was under a doctors care at the time.and they encouraged the use of this as a tool.
If it works!
So if it,s helping you get though bad times or helping you by positive enforcement ,then great! but if youre talking down to yourself .stop.
you really should find someone else to talk to.its too easy to get caught up in your own head if you dont have another outlook.
peace><>

Talking to yourself generally isn't a problem. When to worry? When self-talk occurs outside of socially acceptable situations.
I have included a link to an article about self-talk.

I think it's healthy sometimes. You might get things like chores or errands or figure out a pressing problem. Sometimes you can answer your own question(s). On the other hand if you are psychotic or schizophrenic, you might need professional help.
