http://www.hopstop.com/?city=newyork is great for Subway directions.

Go to the Herald Square station (34th/6th), take the NQRW to the Canal Street stop (Canal/Broadway).

there are 5 different Canal Street subway stations along a 1/2 mile stretch of Canal Street, so if it matters to you where on Canal you end up, you have several ways of getting there. consult a map.

but for my money, the absolute fastest way to Canal Street / Chinatown is to take the express N or Q train from the 6th Avenue side of Macy's at 34th Street / Herald Square. it's only 2 stops and within 10 minutes, and you'll be at Canal and Lafayette Streets.

(if you end up taking a local R or W, don't despair, either change at 14th Street / Union Square, or just continue on to Canal. the local uses a different platform one block west under Broadway.)

Macy's is located on 34th street between 7th ave and 6th ave. After you leave Macy's walk out on the 34th street entrance and turn left and go to 6th ave and 34th street. the entrance to the subway will be there. Go downstairs and get on the "N" or "R" train get on the downtown/Brooklyn destination of the platform when you get into the subway station. It is a quick subway ride. It is about 6 subway stops to Canal street. When you get out there you will be on Canal Street and Broadway. That will be in the middle of China town and you can go either east or west on Canal street.

Another suggestion would be to take the M6 bus located on 34th street and Broadway which is right next to 34th and 6th ave where the Subway entrance is and instead of the subway you can take the m6 bus headed downtown which will take you right to Canal street and Broadway and in this way you can see the sights on Broadway when you ride on the bus.
The bus ride will take a little longer because of the traffic on the street but you will see things when travelling on the bus.

I took the "A" train from the 34th street station down to the Canal St. and World Trade Center area. Ride was only about 10 minutes. Very safe and quick!

Mapquest doesn't give subway directions! That's for driving directions only.

Let me see what I can find, and I'll edit this soon as I can.

You can walk to 7th avenue, and take the number 1 subway line, it should take you straight to canal street in about 15 minutes or less
