Most of the major TV manufacturers are no longer producing Plasma TV's in the sizes you quote, although I believe they still produce the really big Plasma's i.e. 50inch plus?

Read from that what you like, but my guess is that they back LCD more so than Plasma.

I recently bought the 1080p Samsung 40inch LCD (LE40M87BDX) , and it is excellent. Expect to pay about £800 delivered for the 40". They don't do a 42" in this line but do a 46".

My opinion is that the Samsung's take some beating both in terms of aesthetics and performance. The specifications are pretty much the best there is.

Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The "inner" screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42" is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. Plastic because it can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.
Plasma have a glass screen like all other TVs except LCDs. Both are cheap to operate depending on where you live: 3-41/2 cents/hour for plasma and 2-3 cent/hour for LCD.
Plasma is better 42" or larger and in dark rooms or basements and for viewing sports. Most plasma brands also have anti-glare coatings. When I can get another $2000 together I will get plasma.

Bigger is not always better. At least when talking about TVs. The size of you TV should be based on the size of your room. You would not want to put a large TV in a small room because you will be up and close and this could be bad for your vision. Plasma has a more vibrant colors than LCD, but I don't think you can go wrong with either. I found a book called HDTV Simplified that explains all this. If you are planning on purchasing a HDTV you should get your hands on this. From what you learn you could save hundreds of dollars. You can get it at www.HDTV-Simplified.com .

For large tv's like 40 or 42 inch, Plasma is better. Check out this website it compares the two technologies:

it depends on what you are watching... plasma will display better colors, while lcds are generally sharper in picture quality... plasmas handle moving pictures better, while lcds have no glare issues... bottom line, in my opinion, if there is no sunlight entering the room at an angle that will bounce off the tv, go with a plasma... and generally, at that size, plasmas are a little cheaper...

I would say that a Plasma is best at that size, but will use more energy than an LCD

It's really a coin toss these days. Just remember that you get what you pay for in these items. Wichever you choose, don't go cheap. The stuff on sale is on sale because it's not moving. It's not moving because there's something about it that makes people buy something else, ( breakdowns etc.).
