You could try cleaning the laser lens, but when this happened to me a few years back I ended up buying a new Ps2.

It sounds like it might be a dirty lens. At times some of the newer games will have trouble playing.
Try a DVD lens cleaner kit. They are only around $12.00 and they work great.

It's:
a). Dirty lens - there is a cleaning spray for that in any good electronic store, Q-tips with alcohol will do the job too, but it's not really good.
b). The lens is dead - replacement needed
c). Damaged game disc.
