Not a day goes by when our cat seems to have a choking fit! We did take him to the vet and was given some pills for a virus problem that is apparently quite common in cats. We have diligently given the medication, but he is still having this problem.

We think it is distressing to him, because he likes to be close to us when he is having this fit!

Otherwise, he seems normal; just likes to eat too much; his toilet is normal etc, except for this choking he gets.

I have tried to search out the answer myself, but have not had much success, plus going back to the vet to be yet again fobbed off is not cost effective - unless, we have some insight into the problem.

Can someone help?

Butter actually helps a cat pass hairballs down the ol tract, instead of hacking them up on the sofa. (My grandmother used to let her cat lick about a half a teaspoon of butter every day.)
usually when a cat has one of these fits, its a hair ball.good luck.x

It may be fur balls, is it long haired? may be if it eats a lot try cutting out a little of the food he eats for a while to see if it helps. If it continues then get a second oppinion form another vet.

It is fur balls, to reduce the amount of fur balls your cat is coughing up, give him a good brush over with a quality pet brush twice a day, he may be moulting or shedding excess hair. Check your cat's skin to see if he has any dandruff which can be caused by mites or a fungal infection. If you have any concerns, please seek advice from your vet.

Sounds to me like he has a hairball problem,go to a pet supply store and get a hairball remedy and see if that takes care of the problem. Laxatone is a good one.

I have no idea what this could be, but would advise you to get a second opinion. You don't sound particularly happy with the vet advice you have had so far.
There is nothin g wrong with getting a second opinion!

does he eat grass it could be that he has a blade of it stuck behind his larynx this happened to my cat he was making choking noises coughing e.t.c for days! he had a very quick operation to remove it, apparently it's very common so your vet should have picked up on it!
