Nice and cheap do not really fit together for accommodation in Hong Kong. I would suggest the following:
- Hong Kong Youth Hostels: most are in remote areas, but they are in nice settings, clean and comfortable. Jockey Club, Bradburry Hall...Price is about 100HKD per night.
- On Lantau: Silvermine Beach Hotel is a good choice. Relatively cheap, easy and quick to get there by ferry. The beach and surroundings are nice. A good retreat from the hustle and bustle of HK after a day of shopping and sightseeing.
- In Kowloon, where I usually stay:
*Tatami Hampton Hotel, on Changsha street just off Nathan. Clean micro-rooms for about 500HKD. Cheap, great location, usually frequented by young Japanese, Chinese, Koreans.
* Metropark: this chain has several locations in KL and HK. Business style hotel, great service, great locations, relatively cheap. About 700HKD for a double.
* Chungking Mansions: run-down complex of guesthouses in a great location on Nathan. Best value for your bucks, about 100HKD, but it's all relative...I actually like it when I travel alone (I wouldn't take my kids or spend my honeymoon there though). Great bazaar-like ambiance, with backpackers and migrant workers from all over the world. Great little restaurants and snackbars around. Once you get over the stygma, you'll be fine there...
