In term of overall factors, French Bordeaux are among the best wines in the world. It is well known for tradition - has been making top quality wines since 1700's and the quality remains highest in the world - often rated highest in every publication. In addition, with the quality came longevity, and French Bordeaux have outlived many other wines as well as the wine collectors - wine lovers today still can enjoy the wonderful Lafite 1945 or 1957. It is also known to keep up with the changes of time - keep on reinventing themselves and improving. Bordeaux, like all other French wines, are designed to pair well with food and cheese. As a result, while Californian wines may have beaten French Bordeaux in 1976 Paris tasting, these were done without adequate food-wine pairing. If you pair wine with food, well aged and cellared French Bordeaux often come out better than the in-your-face Californian reds. While the price of French Bordeaux are high, part of the reason is because of the weak US Dollar/strong Euro and partly because of the demand. If you think of the top Californian cult wines - Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Colgin - or even the top California reds such as Insignia or Special Select, their prices are as high as the French counterparts. Further, the price of older Bordeaux tend to increase, while the price of Californian wines can be unpredictable.
As a result, while I love my Californian red wines, i still think French Bordeaux - especially the first and top second growth wines - are the best wines in the world, hands down.

Pure quality it is hard to go past a Chateau y'Quem (if you like desert wine) but at AUD$350 for a half bottle it doesn't represent great value.
What's your taste? A big gutsy Shiraz (Hermitage)? How about Penfold's Grange. AUD$400 for current vintage, drinking 2019~2025.
Sparkling wine? Veuve Cliquot 'La Grande Dame' is a reasonable (AUD$200) premium bubbly.
White wine? Almost any Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand's Marlborough region. Some for as little as AUD$15.
I hear they make some wine in Italy too. I'd only use that stuff for cooking though.
Hope this helps.

France is a country, not a wine.
The best wine in the world is the wine you like the best. Many countries including the US, Chile, South Africa and Australia in addition to France, Germany and Italy make some really good wines. Now comes the challenge. You will have to spend much time tasting until you find the one you like best. They don't have to be expensive either. That's also the best part.
Start with some whites and work your way to the heavier reds. I like reds better, but there are some great chardonnays and pinot grigios among the whites. My personal favorites are the cabernets and zinfandels of Kendall Jackson and Trentadue, both California. Yellow Tail, an Australian brand, makes some really good wine.
Good tasting.

If price is not a factor, there are some Bordeauxs and Burgundies that routinely sell for more per bottle than any other wines. But since most of us will never taste these wines, let's get a little more reasonable.
I will second Le Grande Dame for a terrific sparkler.
I like Napa cabs too, for $20-$40 per bottle range you can get really good Napa cab, like Stag' s Leap, Freemark Abbey, Liparita, Caymus...
Frog's Leap zinfandel from Napa is my favorite zinfandel, but I haven't been to Croatia yet.
Marlborough area of New Zealand makes excellent whites, I love Kim Crawfords sauvingon blanc.
