Silverware (silver and silver plate) can tarnish from prolonged contact with some foods. Also, aluminum can have an adverse effect from contact with certain food, particularly those that are acidic. Stainless steel is not a problem.
If the butter knife is stainless steel, there should be no problem.
As for the germ issue that some are suggesting, unless the handle is lying in the food, there's no problem.

If the silverware left a strange color then don't eat it. Otherwise there is no problem. A lot of food dishes are made of metal and there is no problem with any of the food that is left in refrigerator. Aluminum will react to acid food like tomatoes.

If you did, I'd suggest just throwing the utensil in the sink and giving it a quick rinse. Besides, who wants to use cold silverware? (brrrrr....)

I've heard from my mom and grandma that this is not a good thing to do as it will change the taste of the food.
These people are killing me with their "germs on the handle" crap.
hehehehe,
