From a biological/chemistry standpoint all activities uses energy. To say it is lost is not meaningfull, If you play football you'll expend a lot of energy and need to eat more to replenish the energy expended. Same with brain high activities such as thinking, just to a lesser extent.

Serious answer: This question is interesting only from an academic standpoint, because it is virtually impossible to stop thinking. It doesn't matter whether or not we are losing energy by thinking because we cannot do anything about it.
Sarcastic answer: Who says people think?!

It would depend on the type of thinking, I suppose.
If one is doing what I term stinking thinking.Negative thoughts about self, others life in general .or running past traumas and resentments over and over.living in the past or worrying about the future.Id say yes that, that would result in a loss of energy.
whereas right thinking employed by a disciplined mind would while using energy, be replacing said energy
negative thought breaks down ,uses you up,causes emotional drainage and ultimate depression depleting your energy stores.
positive ,creative thought rebuilds uplifts and and attracts positive energy reenforcement.therefore replacing used energy.
