...because you were out numbered in a situation? I was at a Pampered Chef party last night and everyone there was Christian except me. I was talking about taking my daughter and her friends to go see "The Golden Compass" and they all freaked out. They started telling me how they are trying to kill God in the movie and how I shouldn't take her. I don't agree with what they were saying as I am an Atheist and it is a fictional movie made for the soul purpose of entertainment. However, being out numbered, I felt I couldn't speak up. Has anyone else been in this kind of situation and if so what did you do? I kind of wished I would have said something, but I didn't really want to make it a big deal and have the Christians in our small town hunt me down. What say you?

I usually don't go out of my way to declair my Atheism, unless its on YA, where freedom of expression is a little safer.

When I first accepted the fact that God cannot exist, I went around trying to justify my reasons by arguing with people. When ever religion came up as a subject, I jumped in.

I don't anymore for two reasons. 1. Some people cannot handle the thought that their God might not exists, and are very hurt by it. 2. Some people are so irrational about religious belief that they can get violent.

sorry that happened to you, that must've been really uncomfortable. a similar thing happened at an event I attended except it was politically related. Most of the people in this group are republicans and a person who'd just joined is a big time democrat.. she asked some politically related question as a conversation starter and boy did she get an earful from the group.

Religion and politics.... bad conversation choice.

Lamb, believe it or not, I was not the person who got the earful in the above story. but normally I am! LOL

My favorite response to them is a Christian response, but can be used to put Christians in their place: "GEE, I thought your lord came down and died so that you would be under the law of grace and not bound to rules.....Isn't it supposed to be a matter of conscience?"

I wish that Christians would do what the Bible tells them to do, namely , show love and let god work out his salvation with those he chooses. I understand that you are not a believer, and I can respect that, I am not trying to push my beliefs on you, I am hoping that those who do believe would be a little more gracious.

PediC is a DemoC? ..... LOL just kidding.

I don't tell everybody about my atheism simply because it doesn't come up. If it does, I'm either honest or say I subscribe to a parody religion (worshipping Zarquon or being a Pastafarian). This usually gets the point across.

You can express yourself quoting sources without giving a clear idea of your lack of belief. Just some commentary, but if it gets rough change the subject to politics, it always beats religion.

I do not openly talk about my atheism. I live in Texas and you can imagine the reaction of most people here. Its just easier. I do not actively hide it, but just don't advertise it.

Welcome to the Islamic version of Christianity in the USA.

There's a reason they're called the Christian Taliban.
