My husband wants to take our 10 year old daughter to the basketball game. He plans on leaving her in her seat if he needs to go to the mensroom(which he always does), is this safe?

i agree with asking people sitting near to watch her... tell him to ask the nearest woman to watch her, woman are 90% less likely to hurt children.

I think it would be just fine for a 20 minute walk in a safe neighborhood. At most, you'd be a 10 minute walk away, even closer if you had to run home for some reason. I leave my 7 year old alone in the house for about 20 minutes while I am outside but still on the property, and have done so for a few years. I have not ever driven anywhere, though, because I always think what if I were to get in an accident or was not able to get home quickly? If they are sleeping when you go, make sure to leave a big note where they'll see it so they don't wake up and panic when they can't find you. On the note write the time you left, or the time you should be back by, and instruct your daughter to call for help if you've been gone too long.

It really isn't a problem. Yeah there are a lot of people around at a basketball game but that is actually a GOOD thing. Do you really think that all of the people sitting around her would see her father get up and then IGNORE it if another man came over to her and started to drag her away screaming?

HECK NO! There would be so many people around (not to mention security) that nothing would happen. You just need to make sure that your daughter knows that she is NEVER to leave her seat with anyone other than her father and to scream for help if anyone else approaches her... and it would be a good idea to ask people around her to keep an eye on her for a few minutes.

What do you expect him to do just hold it? Or take her WITH him into the bathroom? I can guarantee that a 10 year old girl in the men's room at a basketball game would be more harmful than leaving her in the seat!

I would feel better about her being left in the seat where you can ask two or three from different groups to watch out for her. Give her a whistle and tell her to blow like crazy if she is afraid for any reason. I'd rather look like a fool for a few minutes than not. Also, if you took her with you, wouldn't you have to leave her in the hall waiting while he was in the men's room? I think that would be more dangerous by far.

if it were me, i'd use the restroom before going.

to the person who said that a 10-year-old ought to be able to absorb some drunk spewing invective at them ... do you have a 10-year-old??? 10-year-olds are still in elementary school, and I agree with the person who thinks it's pretty likely they'd get up and go see what the problem was if dad didn't return right away ... and then get totally lost in a huge stadium. what if a fire alarm went off? what if she suddenly had to use the bathroom? and not that this should be the biggest concern, but i guarantee if you left a 10-year-old unsupervised at a basketball game and something bad happened, you would be looking at your kids heading into foster care.....

not worth it.

If he sits near another parent and mentions it when he leaves, your daughter will be just fine. The chances of a freak abduction at a crowded basketball game are less than one in a billion. You have a better chance of winning the lottery.

No I wouldn't leave my 10yr old daughter alone. The people around her don't know and love her.SO they will not care. I'm sorry they won't. Now if you have a freind going with you then that's another matter. That friend could stay with her that friend knows her.
Put it this way at 10 yrs old they still can't babysit. Can't be ;left home alone. So if they can't be home alone why would you leave them alone in public?

She'd be safer in her seat than waiting outside the mens room, standing all by herself looking like she's all alone. If she's in her seat then she can atleast look like she's with someone sitting next to her. If it's a pro game they have ushers and he could find one and let them know he has his daughter with him and if they could keep an eye on her if he needs to go to the bathroom.
Again I really think she'd be safer in her seat than waiting out in the hall.

People are waaay too overprotective of their children. This isn't good for the children; they end up inhabiting a darwin-proof bubble until they turn 18 and are then thrust out upon the world, totally defenseless. Is it OK for your kid to occupy a seat inside a stadium without a parental figure for five minutes? Of course. The worst that could happen is some drunk spewing invective at her. At ten, she should be able to not absorb some drunk spewing invective at her. Let the chips fall where they will. It's just a basketball game. It's not like daddy is taking her to a strip club or anything.

Of course it is. She's ten years old, sitting in a public place. You surely don't expect him to take her in there with him do you? Good grief! Would you embarrass your 10yo son by making him go in the womens with you like a 2yo?

SHE IS TEN YEARS OLD, NOT FIVE YEARS OLD, FOR GOD'S SAKE.

Yes, I would leave her. I would HOPE that she would know not to go with any strangers or do anything bad. Instruct her to scream "HELP!" as loud as she can if someone tries to grab her or do bad stuff.
