Jesus is alive today. As long as you have sin in the world and you submit to sin, you will have a Jonestown and a Waco.
You will have a dictator thinking himself to be a god and influencing the minds of people with false religion. There is only One true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob whose Son is Jesus the Christ. Put your faith in Jesus and not in any man. Jones and Karesh were dangerous men. At anytime, you feel that some person is trying to control your entire life, BACK OFF. We surrender to the Lord and not to man. God gave us His Word the Holy Bible KJV - read it. Study it, so you cannot be fooled by a fool.

Neither.
Jesus is alive today, it is people who exalt themselves over others because of their slavery to their selfish ego that do not realize this and create scenarios like Jonestown and Waco.
Jesus' teachings when followed lead one into communion with God, with Love.
It is separation from God that weakens humanity making it resort to violence and use force to press its ideals on others.
Jesus shows the way to everlasting life, not life after death, not heaven in the skies, or anywhere else. Jesus' teaching shows how anyone can, when they pursue the kingdom above all else, discover it within themselves.

Why would Jesus being alive today have any influence on whether or not such an event would happen again? Unless you think Jesus would be the perpetrator, then he has nothing to do with it.
Even when he was alive, not everyone followed him and his teachings. Especially not those who were in government at the time. They killed him, remember?
Nowadays, with theism becoming increasingly irrelevant, I doubt he would get such a significant following as to be able to prevent such events. And even if he did, who says he'd choose to?

Can we move on, from as if, to what is sufficient: grace.
Jesus: made under the law: cursed every one: Gal 3, 4.
Christ: the end of the law: blessed every one: Rom 10.
E-life of e-salvation is "through Jesus -->Christ": Rom 6.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus-->Christ with you all. Amen.

I think if "Jesus" were to show up today he/she would be very different considering it's over 2000 years later
