I am interested in the former but would like to know how the two branches differ, apart from the obvious difference in lack of space and the fact that Subs don't see the sky for weeks at a time!

Any other differences?

Cheers!

Submarine Community is tight, very tight. Once you are a Submariner, you are one for life. You make friends that can last a lifetime. My dh's best friend & our son's godfather we have known for 14 years, our godson's parents we have known for 8 1/2 years. Even though we havent been in the same town for over almost 4 years we still are close. It is a very good learning experience. Yes space is tight at times, but if you are on a Fast Attack you do get nice port calls. If you want to spend time at home because you have family then Boomers might be the best bet, they are on a pretty set schedule and home more. They are also bigger, Cadillacs as some have called them. Then there is the extra pay that you get each month, along with Sea Pay.

Bubbleheads are a strange breed.. by necessity. they are less about niches..everybody has to be able to multitask because there isn't enough room for everyone to have just one job. More camaraderie, less backstabbing

the medical requirements are a bit more restrictive as well..Migraines will DQ you From Sub duty, but not Surface.

Submariners have a lot more strict training regimen and are held to higher standards than the average Navy squid.

They have to being in a nuclear powered can filled with nuclear weapons.
