He probably has tape which is very common in puppies. Its no big deal. Go to the vets and get a drontal. This pill will wipe out all his worms. Doesn't he need to go to the vet anyway for his shots?

Those are tape worms. Puppies usually have other worms, but any dog can get tape worms. They come from eating fleas. Puppies often have fleas, so this is not surprising. Tape worms, if not treated, could slowly kill a dog, but not quickly.
Since yours is a young puppy, you should take him to the vet to make sure you get the right medicine and dosage. Your puppy should be seeing the vet once a month for it's puppy shots, so you can get the puppy one set of it's shots at the same time as the vet seeing it for the worms.
I know they are disgusting to look at, but I am pleased that you pay attention to your dog and you noticed them. That means you can start treating your puppy sooner and that's good for his health. It shows you love him a lot, too.

Most puppies have worms. They get them from the mother. The most common type is round worms - they look like spagetti. Less common in puppies are tape worms - they look like rice.
Yes, worms can kill a young puppy if left untreated. Fortunately, they are very simple to treat - bring your puppy and fresh stool sample to the vet. He will check the stool under the microscope to be sure of the kind of worms, and give the puppy a dewormer. He will need a second dose of dewormer in three weeks.
Do not try to deworm him with over the counter dewormers - they don't cover all the kinds of worms, and you will almost certianly give the wrong dose, as you need the puppy's exact wieght to know the right dose.

Not anything to do with the food.
Take the dog to the vet for proper deworming. A fecal exam will show what types of worms he is infected with and which kind of medication should then be prescribed. A fecal exam will also show if there are any other intestinal flukes that other medications may need to be prescribed for.
Yes, a worm infestation CAN kill him (s-l-o-w-l-y, as they take all the nutrients from the dog for themselves and the dog can eventually starve to death).

First. ALL puppys have worms. So don't get excited. Most worms cause no serious problems as long as they are take care of soon. Normally deworming is done on one of the first vet visits, along with the regular check up. Take the pup to the vet.

Calm down...worms are common in dogs & puppies and nothing to panic about.
Worms have nothing to do with food.
What you describe sounds like tapeworms..tapeworms are caused by fleas or by your pet eating rodents.
Take a stool, sample to your vet so they can do a fecal test on it ot make sure there are no other parasites they wil lthen give you the proper dewormer for your dog. I also suggest while at the vets you get a safe flea product to use on your dog such as Advantage or Frontline/Frontline Plus.

There's a special product that you can buy in the pharmacy or in the vet that kills the worms.
