Go to your dentist, have a picture taken and he will be able to tell you what it is. There is nothing to fear about getting an opinion. After you find out what it is, then you can make a decision on your course of treatment. Even if it does need to be retreated, that does not mean that the crown has to be removed to do it. In fact, I would think the crown would be totally ok thru it because they are made to last.

You can fix this easily.
You can ask the dentist for advice, or find another dentist if dentists where you are demand too much dosh.
In UK many, many, so many, people travel to France or other EU countries for a dental visit (Poland, Hungary etc.)
The easiest way to treat it now is to drink a little pure Russian vodka which acts as an antiseptic. There are no side effects and it is so much easier than the dentist, if this does not work (you push a little vodka up to the lump with your tongue) then you still have the lump, then I would see a dentist.
Put your health first !

You should go to the dentist. I had this happen after my root canal. It's called a fisula (spelling?). Basically it's a small pocket of infection that got left up there and because there is no nerve ending in that tooth since the root canal it causes no pain. If left untreated you may have to have the tooth pulled. I ended up having to go back to the doctor that did the root canal and he said sometimes people have an extra root up there that gets missed the first time. Get it taken care of as soon as possible though. It's not life threatening but if you want to keep your tooth you should get it looked at.

A "gum boil" is an infection and no infection is harmless. That being said, it could be a number of things. It it came up quickly then it is most likely either a plugged salivary gland (mucocele) or an infection. Infections can come from gum disease or from a dead nerve of a tooth. Nerves can die without giving you pain, and if the infection never builds up any pressure or is draining then the infection may not hurt either.

It could just be a little build up of blood. It can build up and dry to cause a small hard lump. See the dentist to make sure though.

Believe it or not foreign matter such as a broken piece of root can work its' way out through the gum.
Brush daily with Hydrogen Peroxide and it will heal any oral sensitivities and abscesses or canker sores.
After having my two top front teeth replaced with crowns, the root to one hurt all the way up to the corner of my eye. By using the Hydrogen Peroxide I healed it completely by myself.

I doubt they'll remove the crown, it's on there pretty good.
You shouldn't be scared go to the dentist, GO NOW and calm your fears, rather than wait and go through another dental nightmare.
