This is a horrible tragedy and a very tough legal and moral dilemma. First off - I don't think there are any laws currently on the books for which they could be prosecuted and certainly not murder.
Secondly what would such a law look like? Would anonymous avatars such as the ones we use here at Yahoo Answers be banned? How can we safeguard everyone while also keep from infringing on anyone's freedoms? Would we change our opinion on all this if we knew someone at R&S had killed themselves the same day we made some rude insensitive comment to them on-line?
Many good and noble uses for the internet - but like everything else - it can also be used for evil. It is a sobering reflection today - and my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim.

no.
The girl who commits suicide had a choice, and unfortunately made a bad one.
-----------------------------
Obviously from some of the other comments and thumbs down 2 people gave me, there is a true story behind this question, to which I am NOT familiar.
That being said, however tragic & however unfortunate, typing something in an online chatroom, even under false pretenses or a false persona, does not constitute murder should the person on the receiving end decide to commit suicide. It's possible depending on the context that this person could be charged with harassment, but even then, the girl in question was on a computer and could choose to get off it at any time or change her online persona.
It's tragic yes, but that doesn't make it murder or manslaughter. No judge or court would even consider hearing such a case.
I'm just calling it like I see it, so save your thumbs down for an actual wrong answer.

I've seen this story. It's harassment and possibly can be classified as stalking knowing the circumstances after the fact. If they knew the girl was depressed and mentally unstable I can see manslaughter charges possibly being brought. Last I had read there were no laws with which to clearly charge the woman with a crime. The local public is outraged and the woman and her family have received death threats. New laws may come out of this case. A prosecutor has to follow the law though and can't bring charges if the law doesn't warrant it. I find it pathetic and sick for a grown woman to tease and play vicious mind games with a teenage girl in an attempt to hurt her. The attempt to hurt went a little farther than maybe what she intended. The prosecutor will look at intent and law and see what if anything can be done.

She was obviously very troubled from a very early age and the harassing had some for of remembrance of what she experienced at the younger age or a time in her life in the past. This harassment would of contributed to what she had already in her mind of doing but it is not the fault of the person harassing her but a destiny the girl wanted to take a while ago.
Not murder

I read that story. That woman who pretended to be a boy harrassing the girl should be prosecuted for manslaughter or something. And I esp. think the girl's parents should sue the woman in a civil suit for wrongful death.

But why couldnt you just harrass her without pretending to be a boy?
And why didnt you pretend to be something scarier- like a vice cop, or a psychopath?
Be straight with me now- are you sure you havent just imagined this whole thing?

I heard of this story on the news, I do not think it was murder, the girl choose to take her own life.
However I do feel that parent is responsible for pushing her to her limits, the laws need to be changed.

we are responsible for our actions and that is why our words have such great impact and shouldn't be used without thought; once a word is released , you can't take it back; it is like a seed that once released may continue to grow outside of your view; would you have had a hand and some causation , yes but then Judgment is Gods

It may not count as premeditated murder, but this person is still directly responsible for the loss of a life, so I'd say it counts as murder.
