I know it should be thrown in the trash, but I don't want the pressure of other trash to crush it and then tear the trash bag. I'm thinking about smashing them into small pieces and burry them into the ground as a compost but I think painted glass takes forever to decompose. Any suggestions?

Throw them into your neighbors yard. Now it's their problem.

I doubt there are any methods for recycling; especially burying them; but i also doubt there are any LAWS dictating disposal.

I agree with newspaper and a box, and perhaps even marking the box to define what's in it. Obviously once they are in a trash truck; eventually to end at a land fill; broken light bulbs might be the least of the concerns at any location.

Forever is a pretty accurate word to use, as it applies to any glass.

What type of bulb is it? Fluorescent bulbs and tubes contain a small amount of mercury that is harmful to the environment. These bulbs can be taken to a household hazardous waste collection site. The incandescent bulb just drop them in the trash. Follow some of the suggestions mentioned if it's a worry.

I'm thinking that smashing it is not a good idea :P
Well I dont know if all do, but some light bulbs have mercury in them, which is a terror to the environment..
I think there are services that come and collect certain types of lights lol. If not, put it in a box or something?

I do not know about regular bulbs however, the new "green bulbs" have Mercury in them and need to be recycled. Call your town gov't or whoever picks up your trash.

Actually, you can contact a company called Safety-Kleen. They dispose of burnt out light bulbs. It is my understanding though that as long as it is not a mercury-filled bulb, (a florescent bulb that is) you can place it in the regular trash. Good luck.

before throwing it in the trash maybe wrap it in newspaper or what I do is put it in a soup can ... if it's a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) best to find a recycle place to recycle it cuz it has trace bits of mercury

It would never decompose, besides alot of work breaking into small pieces and burying it. Just wrap in newspaper as suggested above and toss in the garbage.

Wrap it in newspaper or keep the keep the box from the replacement bulb when you replace the burnt out one. Put the burnt one in the new bulb's box and the discard it.
