Has there ever been a college bowl game where the two teams playing have the same mascot name, i.e. LSU vs. Missouri or something of that nature? If so, how often has it happened and who was involved?

Interesting question. There are many Division 1-A football schools that share common mascot names, but there have not been many bowl games where two teams with the same name were matched up. I have listed all the division 1A common mascot names below, but remember that some of these teams could not possibily play each other in a bowl game because they are in the same conference (e.g. LSU-Auburn, Georgia-Missisippi State).

The link below lists every Div-1A bowl game ever played. I researched back to 1990 and found just two bowl matchups between teams with the same name:
1) 1997 Peach Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. Auburn Tigers (played Jan 2, 1998).
2) 1996 Peach Bowl: Clemson Tigers vs. LSU Tigers (played Dec 28, 1996).

I could have missed one, and bowls have been played since 1902 so there are a lot of results to look through. If you include 1-AA teams and lower divisions (which technically have playoffs, rather than bowls), the possibilities become quite numerous.

I'm sure it's happened, but I can't site a specific example. If you consider all the Bowl games there are every year, plus the number of years some of these games have been around, plus the number of teams that share the same name (Tigers for one) it had to have happened at least once.

It could happen, but likely not in a bowl game. For example, I'd love to see the Appalachian State Mountaineers play the West Virginia Mountaineers. It should prove to be a surprisingly close game since Appalachian State has proven themselves to be the kind of team that waits for the other team to make mistakes and then capitalize off of them, which often pays off big, like what they did with Michigan.
