I'm confused - Why is it ok to call your child Muhammad but not your Teddy bear? Why don't the parents of children named after him fall foul of these laws?

Ray N.. I ask the question because I truly do not understand the reason. Same as I dont understand how a country that thinks its civilised still has the death penalty..simple really, a bit like you.

Under the Sharia tradition there is no problem boys, or men, being called Muhammed (or any of its many spellings). This is honouring the prophet by continuing his name. The insult is felt when anything else gets called Muhammed. This is felt to be demeaning the name.

The Sudanese government's treatment of the British teacher is in keeping with this tradition. She could have avoided the situation she's in by refusing to name the teddy-bear Muhammed, even if that was what the children in her charge had opted to call it. She was either naive or arrogant about the consequences of doing so. Sudan has its own legal system & she should have been aware of the law relating to this kind of thing, & the Sudanese establishment's attitude to such ideas. In the Middle East's present political climate, it was foolish of her to think this did not matter.

She was arrested because they thought she allowed the bear to be named Muhammad as an insult to the prophet. Many Muslims (including the British Muslim council, and the parents of the children) believe that she made an innocent mistake and is entirely innocent of any intent to insult him. It's a good thing she didn't name a pig Muhammad!! On the news today it has come out that another teacher in the school had a grudge against her, and it was this teacher who reported her (not in September when the bear was named, but now).
The problem now is that the authorities are treading a line between the many Muslims who believe she is innocent, and the extremists who are calling for the death penalty. I think by giving her 15 days (and not 40 lashes) they were trying to appease both sides.

Interesting that you say that only uncivilised countries still give the death penalty. People are still executed in USA!!

Apparently people can be named after the prophet Mohammed but animals can't. However that doesn't wash with me because the name Mohammed pre-dates the birth of the prophet Mohammed, so the name is not exclusively linked to him at all - whatsoever. It's a complete load of crap.

My teddy bear's name is Geoffrey, that whole thing with that teacher naming her teddy bear is really really silly, i don't understand what's the big deal.

I believe that Islamic believers have a sense of humour also. The name was only one of endearment. Burn the bear.
