Not a good idea.

First of all, Varnish may not be totally clear, and may yellow the sneakers or images.

Varnish is an alcohol based finish. It's designed to be somewhat water resistant, and offer a level of sheen; but certainly it's not meant to be applied to fabric; especially one that flexes constantly; and you may end up with it looking like shattered glas; as well as having it chip off.

I doubt there are many products available to you; that would act as clear; flexible; finishes; IE: almost like silicone caulk.

A cute idea; but if it was me; I might just get creative with permanent markers to deco the sneakers.

Glue things to the lace tips, or use some kind of glue that would allow things to be attached and not affect the flex of the fabric and sole. Glue various buttons all over the sneakers; etc.
