I would like to try and make one of those fancy dress costumes where you stick your legs into the ostrich legs and it looks like you are riding the ostrich. I would customise a store-bought one if they weren't so expensive and the wrong shape (I want to make a Chocobo from the Final Fantasy series). Does anyone have any suggestions of how I could make one from scratch?

If you have sewing experience, you could easily make one. I would suggest fleece with some polyfil stuffing. It's easy to sew and holds its shape. Just unroll the fleece and draw your shapes directly onto it. Use feather boas for trim as opposed to individual feathers. I wouldn't bother to make the legs, you could make shoe toppers and wear tights instead.
