The power switch turns things on and off.

If this isn't what you mean should have done your homework sooner !!!

the only switch i know of, is the ethernet switch, which is a must have for me....

It's basically the equivalent of an extension cord. It takes one ethernet connection and lets you plug in other connections (from other computers). I have road runner and three computers. All the computers plug into the ethernet switch and the switch connects to the road runner modem. So the modem talks to the switch and the switch (which has 8 ports) then talks to all the computers that are plugged into it.

There is another thing called a hub, which works 99% equivalent to the ethernet switch. The only difference is the hub talks to all computers at the same time and the correct computer (that is suppose to receive the info) talks back. The ethernet switch is better than a hub because the switch remembers what computer is plugged into it. When it receives info from the modem, it only talks to the correct computer (instead of all of them)

It receives incoming ethernet packets and based on the MAC address sends them out of the required interface.
