check that your machine is threaded correctly
check your needle is ok....not bent or missing the tip....this is a common reason for machines thread breaking
also check you are using a good thread, as cheap ones will also snap the cotton
then finally...to check the tension put in two different coloured threads....say red on top and white bottom....use a different coloured cloth....then sew a couple of inches.....have a look at how the threads interlock......if the top cotton shows loops....then you bobbin tension is incorect and you will have to check it is threaded right and/or the tiny screw needs tightening/loosening......if it is the bottom thread that is looping....then tighten the tension dial.

Sit down quietly and read your books. All of them. Get a piece of material and try the different settings and you'll see how the setting are attributed to the different types of sewing. You have to have an understanding of the machine in order to sew.

I started this way years ago on an old machine. I know have seven, we make quilts and blankets. We also have a serger.

Carefully and slowly go through the operation until you know it be had, try different settings. Make sure both your bobbin thread and you top thread are the same quality, nothing fancy, just plain old cotton thread.
Make sure you needle is sharp and it's hitting in the right spots. The make sure your bobbin is wound right, recheck it, then make sure is loose/tight enough. You should be able to hold the thread and drop the bobbin, it wall fall about an inch, that's correct. Make sure it goes into the machine right.

Put the right foot for the project on the machine. Start slow, never fast, go slow for awhile. Listen for thumping, knocking etc. if everything is O.K. then go for it.

Sewing machines are touchy, you have to be finicky with them, they never operate the same way twice.

It should have a manual that will help you pick the right tension for the fabric you are using, (usually somewhere around the middle unless you're using something very delicate like silk or heavy like denim) but if you're having that much trouble keeping your thread in the needle, then there is a good chance you don't have it threaded quite right. I would check the manual, and make sure you read the instructions, the diagrams are not always easy to read. Hope that helps. If not, mail me. I'm working on a quilt right now myself, which is something I haven't tried before, so I sympathize

It's difficult to know what is wrong without being there, but I think you should go to the store where you bought the machine and ask them to show you how to make the adjustments on your machine. Usually they offer free lessons with the purchace of a sewing machine. Even if you didn't buy it in a store they should want to help you so you will buy fabric and etc. from them. It is possible that there is something wrong with your machine.

BE SURE TO READ THE MANUAL FOR THE STANDARD SETTING. CHECK THE BOBBIN TENSION TO MAKE SURE IT ISNT TOO TIGHT
