get Grandma what she wants.... I have the Britta... and I love it... I like my OWN water, but for the chlorine they add here... so my Britta does just fine as far as taste goes.... and maybe that's what Grandma is after, too.... havent' seen the bigger one yet... mine's just the 'standard' one for the fridge.... I use the water from mine to refill 'water bottles' and always have some at hand in the fridge....

other one that my kid has is the PUR... and it's on the faucet... he likes it a LOT, too.... but Grandma asked for a pitcher, so get that for her (*also get a few replacement cartridges.. they're kinda costly, since they come in three-packs)....

Those purifying jugs are a waste of money, they are nowhere near as effective as the cartridge type. You need mains pressure to purify drinking water properly, you can't just trickle it through loosely packed activated carbon, despite what advertisers will have you belive. If you want a good water filter that doesn't have to be plumbed in, buy an Aqua-Pure Benchtop water filter.
Should cost you around $130 - $150 from good plumbing stores. Its covered under a nationwide warranty, you can get replacement cartridges ANYWHERE and are they a time proven product.
You can fit it with a variety of filters right down to a .5 micron carbon filter which not only makes the water clearer and better tasting, but also provides protection from Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Parasitic Cysts. Anyone can hook these up, they simply screw onto your kitchen tap.
It might be a touch more expensive to buy but it is certainly better value in the long run. Hope this helps you out.

I don't like the pitcher type water filters... It takes to long to fill/filter and usually it would be EMPTY if I wanted some water.. We have a water purifying filter on our fridge water dispenser... Also, I like the PURE faucet mount system.... It has a 5 yr. limited warranty. and there's always coupons online/newspaper to save a bit on the replacement filters.. Which last a really long time. The PURE brand has a sensor to let you know when to change it.... It costs roughly $40-$50 at a wholesale store....

Good luck

Marty Rocks is right. Charcoal filters are only able to filter the taste of the water not the chemicals that will harm you. If you really want the cleanest water you can get, have reverse Osmosis sytstem installed under your sink. It uses a membrane filter that captures the smallest particles and chemicals. They usually also have a charcoal filter built in.
