They are probably looking for people who have a genuine desire to help people, who want to make other students' college experience better. Good listening and communication skills are important, as are being open-minded and non-judgmental (you'll deal with a lot of people who aren't like you, and you have to be able to respect their beliefs and ways of living). You have to be approachable--the kind of person people will trust and want to come to with their problems. You really need to be assertive and able to tell people things they won't like to hear. You need to be a basically likable person, but with enough self-esteem to be okay that some people just aren't going to like you. You also need to be enthusiastic and imaginative about planning activities and getting people involved in them.

The thing you DON'T want to do is to seem too concerned about the pay (if there is any) or the free room and board. That's the fastest way to get yourself eliminated from any consideration for this job! You have to *want* to do the work--if you're just in it for the money, you won't be any good at it. And besides, if that's all you see as the reward for this job, it's not going to be near enough to compensate for all the headaches! They will also want to be sure you're not on any kind of power trip, wanting a position of authority so you can order people around or impose your ideas on them.

Good luck!
