Because both Russian "voters" and American voters respond well to their leaders acting like arrogant bullies on the world stage.
This encourages the leaders to be aggressive, and leads to conflict when their spheres of influence coincide.

Right now there is no "conflict" it is an increasing war of words and not a lot of people are paying attention
Putin has eluded to Bush behaving like Hitler and the Russian Foriegn Minister has more or less called Bush a mad man running around with razors
Ok - so what are the issues ?
The missle defense shielf in Europe which has lead to Russia canceling a treaty - not good
The US maintians it is 100 % defensive - and against rouge nations attacking Russia maintains Iran and others haven't the ability to hit Europe and that it is an offensive as well as defensive missle base on their door step
Russia has compared it to the Cuban missle crisis - When Russia placed missles on the US 's door step and the Americans had a more than justified heart attack
Bush isn't listening to that at all -
There is fear that the US will attack Iran
Iran and Russia maintain Iran is developing nuclear tech for energy - The US and Israel among others in Europe believe they are after a nuclear bomb
Russia and China are frustrating US efforts to impose sanctions -
Russia share the Caspian Sea with Iran and import a lot of oil from Iran - there is a lot of trade and so forth - Iran looks to Russia for protection and Russia has said an attack on Iran is an attack on Russia
The US believes Iran is trying to become a nuclear danger to the world -
------------
No conflict so far but even the most causual of observer can see all the ground work for one is being laid . Complicating this is that if Russia and the US go to war - the world really will end both sides know this
Knowing that the world will end if war between these two nations breaks out has kept things in at least slow motion
I hope all of this is just a hick up in the world affairs of men but with the way things are going my thought is keep your eyes on both the US and the Russians
As a Canadian - I am right in the middle of these two giants
Russia to the north and the US to the south - oh joy oh bliss
Those two go to war war and Canada will be the path of everything and everything
Nice huh ?

In short: Area 51. We have one....and evidently, so does Russia. The new cold war race today isn't so much who can make the scariest nuclear missiles as it is who can put out first the cool whiz-bang ground war soldier gear.
America should divert their focus on our Area 51---and take a hard clear look at Russia's "Area 51".

It's mostly about Iran. Russia has made it very clear that they are prepared to protect Iran if the US decides to attack Iran without cause. The Bush Administration has made several threats regarding Iran and Russia is growling back.

Ideological differences! But not so much anymore! The 'polarity' of the past, is being re-written in contemporary history and in diplomatic relations!
