No its not just an English thing. In USA Xs and Os denote kisses and huggs.

I learned it the opposite way. O's are kisses because when you kiss it makes an O shape with your lips, and X's are hugs because you cross your arms when you hug people. I usually say X only, though. I don't like the little XOXO thing. I also like it better the English way, with X's meaning kisses.

Hello. Those of us here that do still actually write letters recognize the "X" (and "O") as meaning hugs and kisses.
Actually I think we took that with us to the 'colonies' FROM your green island home.
