We're having a problem with the bathroom plumbing. For the past few days, anytime we flushed the toilet a gurgling noise would come from the sink. Tonight we're having a hard time getting the toilet to flush at all. We've plunged and plunged and have gotten the water to go down once, but every time we flush it just fills to the brim and plunging is helping less and less each time. The most recent discovery was that there is now water standing in the bathtub and no one has had a shower since about 9pm (Central). We don't know if we're connected to the city sewers or if we have a septic tank, either, so that kinda limits my ideas. We NEED HELP! PLEASE!

Do you have children? Sounds like you might have a toy flushed down the toilet. After reading your question again I believe the main is blocked.
You probably can't fix it without having a plumber clear the main. This could be a septic problem if so you need to have it pumped. (emptied)
Sounds more like a main line. if its the main it could have roots blocking it or a broken line or many other reasons. Grease put down the kitchen sink and many other reasons. I think a plumber would be the best bet.
Good Luck

The clog has probably moved from the toilet to the drain line for that bathroom. Are any other fixtures in the house affected such as another bathroom or the kitchen sink? Knowing those answers will help you work out where the clog is. If the bathroom is on the first floor, there should be a cleanout plug for that line, either outside or in the crawl space or basement. Unscrew the plug carefully, so you don't get hit in the face with raw sewage and snake it out. If it's a second floor bathroom, there is usually no cleanout, and unless you have really advanced DYI skills, you'll have to hire a plumber to pull the toilet and snake the drain system from there.

It makes no difference if you are on city sewer or septic, except that you don't want to even consider using "Draino" or other lye based drain products on a septic system. I find that the only thing that works well is a good old fashioned plumbing snake.

You have a clog in the main line. Sorry, Drano is not going to help. You will need to "snake " out the line. The easiest thing to do is call Roto-Rooter.
If your house was properly built, somewhere around the outside perimeter of the house is a capped access to you sewer line. The cap is removed and the snake is fed into the line to clean it out. You can buy a snake at the hardware store for about 20 bucks and do it yourself, but the job is messy and a professional will do a better job and they're not that expensive.

You could have a collapsed pipe (for the back-up of water).

The gurgling could be air in the pipes, or rather air in the wrong pipes.

The only other problem (other than the possibility of a serious clog) is one or more of your vents may be blocked.

Call around for plumbers, and obtain WRITTEN quotes. Make sure that the quotes involve EVERYTHING, and don't go with the lowest one simply because it is cheap. It may not include the repair of walls that have to be ripped out, lawn replacement, etc.

sounds like your plumbing is blocked - a septic tank could be full or just the drain.

you could race off to the shop to get a bottle of Drano to see if that works before you call the plumber.

Drano has unblocked my toilet when the kids have stuffed down too much toilet paper and blocked it.

You need a plumber. This problem is NOT just the toilet. It might be roots in your outdoor pipes or a broken pipe somewhere else in the house.
