It's the name of final movement in Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' (which I happen to be playing on my stereo right now)

But what exactly is this gate? Is it real, or was it ever?
Is it still around?

The Gate depicted in Mussorgsky's 'Pictures' was, apparently, never built. I didn't know this until I checked (but did know that all of Hartmann's pictures had been lost) :- see http://grotesmurf.madscience.nl/music/kieveng.htm

Apparently it refers to an entrance gate on the Old city of Kyiv (founded some 1500 years ago).
