I use Dean Markley "Blue steel" strings on my electric guitar
and I used Dean Markley "Alchemy" strings on my acoustic guitar. Why? I've tried other guitar strings and these ones seem to last longer. They have a good, balanced tone too.
I've used the "Alchemy" for like 2 years now and am very happy with them. I've only used the "Blue steel" ones for like a year now. Remember, these strings aren't cheap either. That is why they are so good.

It depends on what kind of guitar you have and what kind of music you wish to play. Steel medium are okay for electric and acoustical. I usually try and get Fender. For a folksy sound go with nylon strings on an acoustical. Go to a music store and strum a few display guitars and then make up your mind. Don't buy strings and then find out once you get home they are the wrong ones.

Dean Markleys are the icon standard of guitarists everywhere. SIT's (stay in tune) strings also are good--but you'll need to spray 'em down a tad to avoid finger fret chord changing squeaks.

Markleys are pricer, largely due to the name--but the difference in resonance over SITs make the extra $$$ spent on them worth it.

Either Markleys are SIT: you can't go wrong w/ these two brands.

I don't know who uses what, but the more expensive strings really are better, at least most of the time. I buy the cheap strings, but guitar is not my main instrument.
