Intellectual base of what?

Of course you can expand your intellectual base. The base is on what you stand right now; it is the result of your work and gathering in the past. You can expand this base by expanding your intellectual knowledge in quality and quantity, by learning, reading, observing, listening, thinking, making experiences by relating and responding to daily life’s happening, etc.
But maybe you mean by 'intellectual base' the given intelligence base, the degree of capability of your intelligence? That base is more difficult to expand as it is connected and limited to what we have received from our parents and what has built up during life time and has formed ones personality. Expanding ones personality will have the result that energy will be freed and this will influence ones intelligence positively and so expand ones base. ‘Expending’ in this case would not mean to gather more, but rather let go of established concepts, beliefs, opinions, attitudes, habits and also clearing up ones unconscious background. Thus expanding intelligence into another dimension, giving the possibility to grow into a base that goes beyond the horizons of intellectual knowledge…

I have two possible answers for you, but they are both dependent upon the scale of your question which could be individual or societal. However, I will only address the individual scenario in my answer.

First, let's address the meaning of 'intellectual'. Intelligence can be characterized as the raw ability to understand, process, and utilize information. With those criteria in mind, there is reason to believe that one could enhance intellect to a maximized potential through mental exercise. Now, these practices would only serve to bring a person to a level of potential that is curtailed by natural limitations, in my opinion. Any further expansion would most likely require some artificial intervention in order to exceed natural potential.

I get the impression, however, that you are actually asking about knowledge more so than intelligence. If that is the case, then simple study will augment a persons knowledge.

I hope its not too late to "expand your base." Look: concepts are two or more integrated perceptions. The more perceptions you have the more concepts you understand. Aristotle didn't give us modern biology by sitting at his desk reading the "Odyssey." He went to Lesbos and "expanded his base."
The Google Guys expanded their base when the perceptions of one integrated with the other and they did what their professors said could not be done--over one weekend, in a garage, after quiting school.

My god man, every time you read a novel, a magazine article, a biography, a definition in a dictionary, you are "expanding your base." Do you want to go back to the "base" you had when you were four years old, and then see "if it is possible" to expand it?

It is possible, as intellectual base of any subject will depend on your being attuned to your individual needs and wants... thereby, mental attitude will be sharpened to the desired result of whatever the field you are into.

Your question is very vague. I wish it was more clear so I can answer it more specifically.

Our mind is formed through neuronal connections. There is something called neuro plasticity, this means that after trauma or shock, a person can reconstruct the workings of his/her inner mind with hard work. So yes you can. But of course to a limit.

Ego expansion is normal for people who learn. Find a purpose for doing that; purpose founds the identity against its role confusion.
