This is probably what I'd try first:

...spray both sides of paper lightly with acrylic spray
....fold plane into shape
....brush all over well with diluted permanent white glue (like Elmer's GlueAll), or with a water-based acrylic sealer for bare wood (from hardware store), or an acrylic gel medium (from an art supply or a crafts store), or acrylic paint or acrylic paint for fabric since it's fairly flexible, or maybe other things (then let dry)... perhaps do a second coat.

You could try the first coating of the paper with the more liquidy things rather than the spray, but then the paper may not hold the folds as well, or it may be cracky or more opaque looking where the folds are.

YES dip the paper in white Wax, molten wax, this is the best idea for waterproofing paper. I've done this my self for a project the only problem you may have is sticking eg, a string to the waxed paper to suspend it. This can be easialy fixed by using molten wax as a glue Good luck :-)
