It depends on the company. If you're working for a large co, you could probably take as much time as you want with no problem. If you work in a small company, it might be a burden on your fellow employees to cover for you. Yes, no one anticipates funerals but you have an obligation to the living as well. Ask how long they can spare you. Prepare to be disappointed, but you just might be surprised.
Most places allow 1 day for a grandparent, the day of the funeral. However, you have a unique situation.

You will basically get what you get from your employer, like it or not. Most employers will allow you to take off for the funeral. I don't mean to sound mean, but people grieve at work every single day, so telling them you need a considerable amount of time off to grieve will probably not fly with them.

In a nutshell, you will either have to be back when your employer says so, or you will need to plan on finding another job. If you are a private childcare provider, you will find yourself minus all of your clients. That is too much a hardship for people who have to find alternate childcare while you are gone.

Either way, sure am sorry to hear about your grandmother.

I know a week doesn't sound like very much, but since you work in childcare more than a week off could cause a lot of hardship on their end that they have to find alternative daycare. I guess it depends on how many children you care for and how understanding they will be if you take off longer. Maybe 10 days would work? So sorry to hear about your situation - it must be very hard.

Actually a week sounds more than most employers would allow. I used to work at Wal-Mart and there they only allow for a couple of days to attend the funeral of an extended family member. My current employer allows for up to a week for any funerals for extended family members, but for immediate family members more time is allowed. As for the travel, that is part of the agony of having family that is far away.

How much vacation are you entitled to? Try and get 2 weeks. Flying that distance is going to cost considerable money. If you could ask around and try and find a substitute for the two weeks it might not matter so much to your employer if you have to go on short notice.

A week. You get two weekends attached. So you have 9 days.
