I admire your commitment, sammi somewhere.
We plan on putting up a light display, a modest one. We are slowly changing our holiday lights to LEDs.
(Chaplain John, where did you get your LEDs?)
We keep a lighted Palm Tree and a string of clear lights out front all year long. We turn them on when we are sitting out front in the evenings. We add holiday lights periodically, for example, I add a red ribbon to the palm tree and lighted 'gifts' under the palm tree.
We are looking into incorporating solar panels into our renovations next year; I'd like to use the solar panels to power our outside electrical sockets. Wish me luck!

Sad...indeed.
Many people keep lights outside all year round, and just use them during the holidays.
If you are concerned about our dying planet and what you can do to save energy costs, then using the energy efficient light bulbs will save you enough so that you can put up a string or two of lights for awhile with no dramatic increase in your energy bill.
Those who want to make a statement about greenhouse emissions and the like should be looking for many ways to change their living that is more earth friendly, and there are numerous ways.
The thought that the skies above are almost completely covered with aircraft at any given time is enough proof that earth is being choked...along with all the highways congested with vehicles tied up in traffic jams...as a total...is the major cause for the earth's slow death.
Your two strings of lights don't matter as much.

Well said abluelamah.....I agree we should all be concerned in these matters and do as much as possible to help the greenhouse effect, and I do, every bulb in my home is the energy efficient, so I will be Putting up my lights, it's the only biggest pleasure I get out of life is this time of year to see all the wonderful displays, it just would not be Christmas without them.....it's all such a sorry state that folks are even having to think this way, shame the Rocket launchers, car manufactures and countless other things don't think this way....so I DO NOT feel guilty one bit for indulgeing in my one pleasure

I admire what you're trying to do, but it's going to be a long and sad year without any kind of celebration.
I recommend the color changing led lights, even if it's just a small table top tree.
I haven't put up lights in years, I usually just admire everyone else's.
I am traveling in an RV, so lighting it up, well, I'm not even sure how I would attach the string of lights without harming the gel coat finish.
Maybe this year, I will light up a palm tree and enjoy it.
I'm moving south either tomorrow or the next day:~)

That's a good one. I was watching the PG&E workers putting their lights up on the outside of their building just yesterday. What type of a message is this giving? I hope they are using low energy bulbs! I stopped celebrating YEARS AGO. Far too much hype goes with Christmas these days. I'd rather just watch the fools with their packages & trees tied to the tops of their cars!
I see it as a childrens Holiday.
We need lights of some sort unless we want more crime. It's already far too dark at night where I am at.

Last year I was worried about putting up my Christmas lights. after much thought I put them up and will do so this year also
The same day I went to the store and bought two cases of those energy efficient bulbs. My daughter and I gave everyone one on our block two light bulbs for Christmas.
I gave each of my children ten bulbs for their homes.
I purchased more bulbs and when I would see friends at the stores during the holidays. I gave them a bulb.. Yes, am a little crazy..... but it made me feel like I was doing something!
I turn my lights on after 8pm and set a timer for them to shut off......It would not be Christmas without a little beauty we all need beauty...........

I've given all my xmas lights away. Electricity bill here in Northern Mexico is outrageous. I'll take a walk and enjoy the neighbor's display. Fire in the fireplace, wreaths on the door, venerable faux fir trees in the house and popcorn strings on the trees outside for the birds. The Yule season lives on, with changes.

Put the lights up Scrooge! This year I'm using Google Map to chart our path when we go look at the lights. By effectively mapping out the shortest distances between displays we are going to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions from our car! I'm happy I figured this out before we wasted gas.

The other evening I happened to be out & about & saw that most folks are still putting up lights-no idea what kind. I have talked to my many friends that are in the field(s) of earth sciences etc. & they all agree-it's too little, too late to stop or even slow down what is coming.
With that in mind, I sat back & enjoyed the sight, for it just maybe the last time I see it.

Just finished putting ours up today.
We have converted all outside lights to light emitting diodes. They're great! The energy consumption on them is so low that the estimate of cost to operate them is about $1.86 per 600 lights for a 45 day season.
