In the 50's ( half a century ago) we started doing experiments with rats in a cage

Put to many in and they start eating each other - No matter the food and water supply - the population density per square foot reaches X and disaster follows

So they did experiments with humans - No no one ate each other - but temper flared fist fights and so on happened

Too many people per square mile = anger violence and so forth

Ok fair enough - Why is it then that we act all surprised when it happens ?

Population density in cities jails and so on go up and so does violence - It is not the sole cause - no not at all but it is a known cause and a big one -

A good analogy is we know smoking causes cancer - no surprise - so no one acts surprised when a smoker gets cancer it is at least openly talked about

But when over crowded humans react as we know they will we ignore it and make the same error over and over

Why?

People are free to live where they want to live. I live in the suburbs and it is not overcrowded here. People are on waiting lists to get tiny, super expensive apartments in Manhattan just a few miles away where they are packed in like sardines. Why? Go figure. No one is holding a gun to their heads.
