Agreeing to be a co-signer is a suckers bet and a financial mistake!
If nothing else hopefully, you have learned a valuable lesson.
As co-signer you promise the lender to repay debt in the event the borrower defaults without exception for any reason.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. You sound like a jewel. You would be responsible for it if you co-signed but since all you receive is SSI, I don't think there is much anyone can do to make you pay.
By the way, I know you say he is a good person. I'm sure he probably is but what he is doing is wrong and you really should at least say something to him. I would not help him anymore unless he pays you back and mends his ways.

Hmm, I'm surprised that SSI qualified you as a cosigner. And I wonder if the bails bond man is just using scare tactics now. Saves them the work looking for him. Which they would have to do otherwise in order to get their money back. Call your local legal aid office to find out if they can garnish SSI, but I doubt it and don't let those guys harass you. Most of them are crooks anyways. I admire you trying to keep your promise to your friend, but now you might help the kid more by helping him learn his lesson and spending some time in jail.

If he doesn't appear, you have to pay the amount you promised. I don't know if they will take payments or not but you have to ask. This is the problem with signing for someone. I'm so sorry that you're going through this and pray that you'll be able to fix this problem. Perhaps someone can turn him in. Check all your options and see if the courts can assist you.

I understand your desire to help this young man, but if you really want to help him, don't enable him. He has now gone back on his word to you. You clearly do not have the financial resources to help him in this way, or probably any other considering your limited means.
It may suck to hear this, but you need to see if you can have your name removed from the bond. It will mean that a warrant will be issued for his arrest, and he will have to make amends in whatever way the court sees fit. He is an inconsiderate child for putting you in this type of position. It saddens me that he doesn't have more respect or concern for you than this. He needs to be responsible for his own mistakes. You do not need to be, and you don't need to feel badly about doing what you NEED to do.
Hope you do what needs to be done. Good luck.

Sorry for the problems..... but.... if SSI is all you receive, and you can not pay, the the bondsman is just out the money.
SS and SSI can not be garnished for bills or other such debts.
All he can do, is go after the guy mentioned.

I think since you signed it, it's your debt. You might want to ask a lawyer, though. Think of the poor bail bondsman. He's gotta pay the government. They don't take excuses.
You should have tough-loved him. Jail would have been better.

As far as I am aware, cosigning a note says that you agree to pay the debt in full in the event the original debtor defaults.
