Neither career option is better or worse then the other, they cannot be compared, they are in different fields.

What made you decide to take up engineering instead of becoming a doctor? Maybe you need to think about that. Was there something that seemed more appealing? Try to get back to the basics.

If you really and truly can't talk yourself into staying with engeering, then I don't think its too late to change. I know this may not be the advice you wanted to hear, but I believe in people following their true passion, and dreams. Don't just quit because its gotten hard. Life is hard. Nothing in life worth having is not worth working for. And if you think beccoming a surgeon would be easier, its not. You have to endure 100+ hour weeks, hours of standing in an operating room, and in the begining all you do is watch, or hold a clamp. The pay sucks in the begining too.

Nothing makes an engineer better than a doctor.

As for which is a better career it depends on whether you would rather deal with dirt and chemicals, or germs and bodily fluids.

As for career and income prospects, they're really about the same. A doctor can specialize, become a surgeon or hospital administrator. By the same token, an engineer can obtain advanced degrees, and become a salesman, manager, or business owner.

So really it comes down to what kind of problems you would rather deal with all day.

(The answerer is not a Doctor /Engineer.)
One should note that both are needed to the society.Comparison between the professions as better or worse is not right. If one wants to be the surgeon, OK find out the possibility of shifting to medical /surgery stream.
Human anatomy is also a kind engineering (Human engineering) one need to have knowledge of
human geometry (Ergonomics-Human Engineering through which Furniture is designed to provide convenience to the users.
Engineering provides the knowledge of how technology is developed in various branches.Medical equipments & surgical tools/ items are produced through engineering knowledge.Even a Surgeon requirs engineering knowledge & engineer needs knowledge of medical sciences in developing required equipments.
If ones aptitude is more in medical science better shift(one may undertake psychometric test to verify ones ability to be a surgeon). To be a surgeon also require certain abilities. Some Doctors fall down(get guddines/go unconcious) when they see dead human body/human blood at the time of surgery which if they do not overcome may get disqualified to be surgeon.

Know what, I have a friend who took up Management of Information Systems but knew that her real calling was to become a doctor. She graduated with an MIS degree but later on pursued pre-med courses and forward to now, is preparing for her board exams ;)

I suggest that you don't force yourself to stay in Engineering if you really want to become a surgeon. It can be done! :)

actually you can have both. you cannot enter med school without finishing first a degree, if you really want to be a surgeon, finish your engineering course first then take up medicine, make that engineering course your pre- med course.

those professions are good, they are great in both ways in their respective fields.

technically enginners do not deal with peoples life directly which doctors do.

one advantage of an engineer is that you are not to undergo another schooling for your field of specialization.

another advantage is that you can have more time for your family because you are not 24 hours on call.

What makes one field better than the other? Nothing really. Whatever you decide to do, go into something you like to do. If you want to be an engineer, dedicate yourself to being the best one you can become and go for it.

It's like apples and oranges -- both are good for what they're good for! Why shouldn't you pursue medicine? There's no law that says you have to stick to what you started if it's not satisfying to you.

Nothing. doctor's save LIVES.. Engineers create video games where we can kill each other. Doctor's play the role of GOD. Engineers are responsible for increased pollution, nuclear weapons, chemicals in our foods, processed foods, cancer, TV. Engineers are also a dime a dozen seeing that so many come from India. Doctors are always in high demand and with the increase in baby boomers are in demand now more than ever.
