This is the first year in a long time that I've had my own place to decorate. The problem is that it isn't just my place, I have a roommate. A couple weeks ago we talked about getting a Christmas tree, and agreed to find a cheap one and share the cost (should be like 10 bucks each). My mom even bought me decorations for it. This eveing, my roommate informs me that she has "bad news about the tree". She doesn't feel like she should help buy it, because her parent's have saved all this money for her for school(we're in college), and it's their money, not hers, so she can't help me buy one. She's kinda been against decorating the place from the beginning, and we've used all of my stuff that I had gotten a long time ago, so I really feel this is just her way of getting out of having a tree. Needless to say I'm a littel mad, and don't really have the money to buy the tree and lights for it....so do I find a way to get that money, or just go without the tree?

No, I'd say it's better if you take the money out of your wallet or use a debit or credit card. I wouldn't suggest keeping money in your throat, where you would have to cough to access it.
OK, seriously, I wouldn't start a fight over this. Just don't get the tree and move on. You can still decorate your place. Any ornaments that hang (like the ones that your mom bought you) can be hung on colored strings (or yarn) that you can hang on walls, between corners, between bookcases, etc. And last I checked, string is cheap. Except that designer Parisian string but that stuff is a total rip-off.
Look, I know you wanted to decorate but this seems to be a sore subject with you roomie for some reason. Is it really worth fighting over? You can decorate with what you have for no extra money, a way to "split the difference": You decorate a little but she doesn't have to pay anything for it. Propose this to her and see what she says. Good luck.

I'm in college and I have my own place, no roommates though. I kinda rationalize that since I'm not going to be/celebrating at my place theres not really a point in buying a real tree. I did take a lamp and string lights around it as a makeshift tree. You can also buy a live/planted 3ft tree for about $15 if you find the right place and can keep it all year round, saving you the trouble of buying one next year. Theres always the option of buying a small fake one for about the same amount of money too. Personally I just don't see the point if you're just going to go home for christmas anyway, but the decision is up to you. If you already have decorations up though, do you really need the tree?

If you really have to have a tree, I wouldn't put it in a common area. I went to a thrift store last year and found a cute little fake tree, already decorated and lit, for $10. I got it for a sick friend that couldn't leave her room.
If you want to go for the real thing, get a very small one, and again check out garage sales and thrift stores for lights and such. Trees are often cheaper if you wait till closer to christmas.
Or you can do without. Some years my parents and I don't get a tree. For us we'd rather spend the money on eachother. It doesn't mean that much to us. We do enjoy decorating though, so occasionaly we do. Or we'll decorate a house plant, or plant in our yard instead. Just have fun with the season. Don't take it too seriously. Life is stressful enough, as you know as a college student, no use stressing over little things.

I hate to say it, but your room mate sounds not only cheep, but she sounds a bit like the Grinch. I bet that she does not have trouble spending her parents money when she wants that special pair of shoes, or when she wants to go out drinking or out to eat. She is probably very well dressed because she enjoys spending her parents money on clothes. I would not give her the satisfaction of getting a tree, and I would probably pull down the decorations that I have put up and put them up only in my room. I would tell her that she does not seem to be in the Christmas Spirit and you don't want to bother her with your decorations. I bet this may give her a new line of thinking. People like her often live off of other people. They know that you really want one and she is banking on the fact that you will still buy a tree even if she does not help out. So don't give in to it, because she will be enjoying it a lot more than she is leading on. I get really upset with cheep people. I am sure that if she asked her parents they would tell her to go ahead and spend the ten or twenty dollars on the tree in fact they probably already gave her extra money for it but she probably spent it on herself. Just a hunch. I don't know your room mate, I am going off of the fact that she backed out of a deal that the two of you had between each other and as a parent I would want my child to have a tree in their apartment.

I would get a small one from the Dollar General type store. You can get one for about 10 bucks.
Don't let your roommate ruin your Christmas like Scrooge.
Good Luck!

If you want a tree, then get one. Don't let someone else bring down your Christmas spirit especially if you want one. Make sure to keep it in your room (I wasn't exactly sure if you were in a dorm or not) or on your side since you would be paying for it yourself. It would be YOURS. Hope you figure out what you'll do and have a Merry Christmas.

Just get you one of those small artificial trees, and set it on a table. Next year maybe you will have a roommate with a better attitude.

YOU WHAT!? first of all you can't keep your rats in a tank because it is know to cause respiratory problems that are irreversible and putting a towel over the tank makes it even worst you can use newspapers or toilet paper that works just fine
