My computer runs on Windows xp and I have a broadband connection. Recently, I got Windows xp reinstalled as earlier one had got corrupted. I notice that when I opt for shutdown, the computer seeks permission to install updates before shutdown (There is option to shutdown without installing updates too). If I opt for installation, computer starts counting updates installed (e.g. installing update 1 of 8, 2 of 8 so on). Last night, number of updates was as high as 76. What are these updates which Windows xp seeks to install before shutdown? Is it some sort of spyware? I am confused.

On a fresh installation of Windows XP, service pack 2 (which I recently did on one of my computers) there were 82 updates POST service pack 2. I wasn't happy either, but this is nothing to worry about. This is why Microsoft will be releasing XP Service Pack 3 some time next year.

This is a very common thing when you reinstall an operating system. Next time you do so, just click Start > All Programs > Windows Update and do all the updates available, as this should improve performace, security and options in your computer.

Microsoft is NOT adding spyware to your computer, so don't worry. If you want to have control over the updates your computer does, you can Press Start, right-click My Computer and select properties, then click on the tab named "Automatic Updates", and finally click on an option that says "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them".

With this selected you will now control when the updates will be done each time Microsoft notifies you theres one available, and also see info regarding what the update is about.

Windows xp has been around for a while. Since you just reinstalled it, there are a lot of updates to install. There is no need to worry, but if you do not want to install them, you can go to the security center in the control panel, and turn off updates.

They are all the critical and security updates you need after reinstalling your xp system. Let the computer do the updates as this will help your pc run more efficiently and securely.

Normally, Microsoft security center would only issue one set of update per month. If you got such message per each shut-down. There are problems in you computer.

You should update your anti-virus or even better your internet security suite. Then perform a full scanning with your system recovery disabled.

Then, go to microsoft.com/security to do a proper update.
