If so, what experience? Familiarity with the law, military command, life experience? What do you think?

That really is a great question - what does prepare you to hold that office.

Or...

Is too much time in the political machine a handicap. Does a person with years and years in politics become too jaded, disconnected, and compromised to be truly excellent?

Legally, no. There are a few things like age, no criminal record (though I am not entirely sure of that) birthplace (in USA), amount of time as resident of USA, property ownership, and a few other things. But no expereince is necessary.

Think about it, if there was some sort of experience requirement who would say what expereince is good or bad for the job. Some might think being a senator for 12 years is good. Others would want a former CEO. But what about a guy who ran an NGO? What about a school teacher?

Certain experience such as a governor of a state is the type exposure a person running for president should have. However, one of our better presidents( a Republicans viewpoint) was Harry Truman who succeeded FDR. He assumed command with little knowledge of the office, in the final stages of the war in Europe, during the beginning of the atomic age and carried us through in fine style with his only exposure that of a senator.

I would say some "executive experience" like a governor or mayor, or General, or even a CEO as that resembles the job much better than a legislator.

im in govt right now and as far as i know you only have to be a natural born citizen of the US, over 35 years of age, and have lived here for at least 14 years. it didnt say anything about experience though

i believe experience is vastly overrated. politics needs a large turnover of public servants (lol) anyway to avoid entrenched politicians who seem to only get more corrupt as time goes by. all someone really needs to have is intelligence and a range of advisors. and a love of freedom would certainly help as well.

None.

Look at Bush. He's an idiot with no experience. And you managed to elect him!
