You must decide if you want your tree to be "themed" or just a traditional mix. I have always done a red and gold tree with white lights in my living room. It is seen from the front, neighborhood street. I wire poinsettias to the ends of many of the branches. This year however I have gone White and gold in that room and it looks very regal.

In my dining room I do a tree of sugared fruit. It has white lights and the fruit is pear, grape, apple colored but has a matte sheen to it with the sugaring on top of that.

Our family room tree is the one we put our presents under and enjoy as a family. It is the tree seen from the busy road that runs behind our house. It has multi-colored lights with a wide array of ornaments. I am 42 and some are from my childhood and then there are the ones we have collected over the years as a family. It is so full!!! It also has my boys first Christmas animals nestled in among the branches.

I also have a tree that has golden lights with wooden beads all around. It is decorated in nothing but Noah's Ark.

You'll know what you like when you see it. Buy the majority of it AFTER Christmas to get the best deals.

Have fun and Merry Christmas!

What is your favorite color? What's the best accent color for the room your tree is in?
Most colors look festive on a tree.
The original Christmas tree was inspired the legend goes, when Martin Luther saw a snow covered evergreen surrounded by star light at night.
So he got the idea (from old German pagan tradition I am guessing) to take it inside and decorate it with candles.
Our idea of a traditional Christmas tree is related to the Victorians. The English during that time didn't have Christmas trees, as it was a German custom. But Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, who was German introduced the Christmas tree to England and it became all the rage!

All colors, but red is my favorite. the tree just looks like Christmas with red.
I have some amber ornaments that look nice.
And white shows up well, and looks pretty. My Mom made me some crochet snowflake ornaments, they really do show up on the tree even at a distance away.

Go to walmart in the kids craft section. Buy a spool of 20 gage wire, some red beads that kind of look like snowflakes they come in a bag of 100 or 200, also buy a bag of the clear or white. Just string them on the wire alternating colors ( red, white, red, white) then all you have to do is cut them to your desired length, bend both ends so the beads won't come off the curve the top to make candy canes. The materials will make a bunch. I have about 100 on my tree and it cost less than 10.00. I attach them to the tree with the ornament hangers that you would buy for Christmas balls.

What sort of mood are you trying to create? What part of the country are you in? If you want the typical schlocky X-mas - there's nothing wrong with going middle american and putting up the red & silver orbs. If you want to create a statement, go with a theme - like something monochromatic and unusual - all blue, or stately with gold & silver. Whatever you do, do it with aplomb and reserve.
