My boyfriend went under a house, (he's a Plumber, locating a leak), and as soon as he laid down he felt this sharp pain in his chest, it hurt so bad that he had to get up and tell the customer that he'd be back. I think it's heartburn, because I've had this sensation before, but I maybe wrong. He has never had this before, but he does smoke regularly. Can anyone help us understand what it might be? Is it heartburn? He ate a Chroiso burrito today before he went to his job.

If its heartburn it should go away in a few hours. If it doesn't go away, there's all sort of things it could be, but given the circumstances, there's a good chance it could be caused by a rib that slipped out of place or inflammation where the ribs and sternum meet.

Maybe he is having allergic reaction to something he was breathing or he is just achy. I would suggest taking him to the urgent care which is cheaper then the ER. Or the ER. Having trouble breathing is NOT good or a thing to wait and see what happens. Just to be safe ya know? :D

It could be various things. If he had difficulty breathing he needs to see a doctor for assessment and proper diagnosis. Why are you on here asking?? We have no way of telling or even speculating on what might be wrong.

Could he have pulled a muscle. I pulled a chest muscle a few months ago, and it was the worst pain ever. It hurt to breathe. I was scared and the ran several tests and all we could figure was a pulled muscle. It took several weeks to heal, and the pain was awful.

At the very least, your friend should have pain meds. There is NO REASON a person should have to suffer as it sounds like he is. Even if he has NO INSURANCE, he needs to get some pain meds. I agree....get a second opinion and pain control. Dont go back to that ER, either.

I can see that this problem has something to do with him being a smoker and he is suffering from pneumothorax. You need to consult a medical practitioner coz this condition is very painful and the one solution for this is to insert a tube into his chest area to remove the excess air. i hope i was able to help.

I suggest he go to a doctor right away and find out - it may be something serious. Maybe you can help him quit smoking - it will cause many health problems as he gets older
